City Council to Consider Plan to Revamp Public Parks

Trenton N.J. – Trenton City council will tomorrow consider the City’s plan to refurbish parks in all four wards. The Gusciora Administration hopes to address longstanding conditions of disrepair in the over 60 public parks throughout Trenton.

“We seek to replace everything from aging swing sets to the collapsed bulkhead at our Marine Terminal Park,” said Mayor Gusciora. “We also hope to complete the overhaul of Hetzel Pool in time for summer recreation season.”

At stake is Council’s approval for a contract to carry out multiple improvements in virtually every City park.  The park’s improvement and planning contract was granted after a Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued by the City.

“The fact remains our parks are in a sad state of disorder, and it is important for our residents and especially our children to have safe and plentiful recreation options,” said Gusciora. “We have heard parents voice countless complaints about the conditions of the parks and that their children have little to do after school or on weekends. It was simply unacceptable to leave them in their current condition.”

The Mayor said the proposal was made after meeting with civic groups and park advocates. The plan will touch upon all aspects of park management, including new plantings and landscaping, resurfacing of basketball courts, new lighting and drainage improvements, repairs to historic brickworks and paving, and new playground equipment.

“All of our residents will benefit from these park improvements.  It’s a tribute to our historic green space and that they will once again be fully maintained,” concluded Mayor Gusciora.

The proposal will be up for a Council vote at their Thursday session.
