The City of Trenton’s Department of Health Wins $95,000 Grant

Trenton N.J. – The Office of Local Public Health, a division of the New Jersey Department of Health, has named the City of Trenton as one of 21 grant recipients in their “Strengthening Local Public Health Capacity Grant Operations” program.

The funds will subsidize the City’s efforts in providing immunizations and vaccinations. Additionally, the Division will improve outreach and alerts for dangerous infections. The grant will help reduce the number of residents affected by vaccine-preventable illnesses and establish proactive measures in the face of disease outbreaks. Shakira Abdul-Ali, Health Director, stated “I am proud of our Division of Health’s initiative and I am proud of our Department’s comprehensive approach to public health. We are committed to empowering residents and equipping them with the resources that they need to plan for a healthy future.”

“This funding is part of $2.5 million awarded to 21 local health agencies to strengthen public health capacity related to communicable disease and to provide training for public health workers,” said Shereen Semple, director of the Office of Local Health for the New Jersey Department of Health. “It will strengthen our ability to detect and respond to communicable disease outbreaks.”

Mayor Reed Gusciora noted “After years of neglect, our Administration is carrying out its mission to apply for every grant possible.” Trenton’s Executive outlined that the grant will help meet two objectives “the first is to meet the needs of residents and the second is to ensure that we maintain effective channels of communication with them.”

Per their vision statement, the Department of Health and Human Services aims to provide an environment that produces a high-value quality of life for residents, employees and visitors, that is healthy, safe, self-correcting and self-generating.
