Congressman Kim Announces His Guest for Tuesday’s State of the Union

WASHINGTON DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) announced he will be joined by Marta Nelson, a resident from Southampton, New Jersey who is benefiting from her Insulin costs being capped at $35 per month thanks to Congressman Kim’s support for the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“I’m thrilled to have Marta join me as my guest from New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional district for this year’s State of the Union,” said Congressman Kim. “Marta represents the over 7,000 seniors across our district, and up to 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries across the country who use insulin and are benefitting from the Inflation Reduction Act’s $35 per month out of pocket cap on insulin costs. As we take this week to reflect on the state of our union, I hope we can use the time to come together and support policies like this one that are quickly and effectively improving the lives of seniors like Marta.”

“I’m so excited to be able to join Congressman Kim for the State of the Union. He’s done a lot for me and for so many of my friends, I feel very fortunate to have him as my Congressman because he gets it,” said Marta Nelson. “Because of the high cost of medicine I still work, but things are getting easier. In the next year my husband and I are going to save $1,200 on our insulin, and in another 2 years, once Congressman Kim’s $2,000 out of pocket cap goes into effect, I will probably finally be able to retire. I’m so grateful to Congressman Kim for his work and for inviting me to be a part of the State of the Union. I’m excited to join him on Tuesday!”

Congressman Kim voted to pass the IRA in the 117th Congress. In the bill was also a provision co-wrote by Congressman Kim that will cap the total out of pocket cost on prescription medication for seniors on Medicare at $2,000 per year, which averages $166 per month. These savings paired together will be life changing for seniors who want to retire with dignity.

Congressman Kim is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Select Committee on China.
