Congressman Kim Votes to Pass Gun Safety Measures

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to pass two common sense gun safety measures that would ensure guns don’t end up in the hands of dangerous individuals while protecting 2nd Amendment rights for law-abiding Americans.

“We lose more than 100 Americans a day to preventable gun violence; these bills will save lives,” said Congressman Kim. “By enhancing background checks and closing loopholes to keep guns out of the wrong hands, we create safer communities for our neighbors and law enforcement personnel while protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. We have seen the consequences of inaction. Nobody wants to read another story of a mass shooting or a child taken away too soon because Congress failed to act. We have the power to fix this and we can’t wait anymore.”

The first bill, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, would simply apply the same background check requirements from licensed gun owners to unlicensed gun owners, who often sell their products at gun shows and online. The second bill, H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, would close the “Charleston Loophole”, which allows a firearm sale to proceed if a background check is not completed within three days. This loophole allowed a gunman to purchase the firearm used to murder nine parishioners at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. Congressman Kim is a co-sponsor of both bills.

Congressman Kim is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Committee on Small Business. More information about Congressman Kim can be found on his website by clicking here.
