Says Providing Disabled Veterans with Big Savings a Small Price to Pay

Senator Kristin Corrado’s resolution urging Congress to allow disabled veterans access to military commissaries and exchange stores passed the Senate Military and Veterans Committee.

“Honorably discharged disabled veterans and those with service-connected disabilities have sacrificed so much for our nation,” said Corrado. “There are over 4 million United States veterans with a service-connected disability. Allowing them access to commissaries and exchanges where they can save money on basic needs is a small way we can say ‘thank you.’”

Currently, online commissaries are only open to active-duty service members, National Guard and reserve members, 100-percent disabled veterans, Medal of Honor recipients, and the families of such groups. Corrado’s proposal would permit honorably discharged veterans and their families to shop at online military commissaries.

Commissaries also save military members an average of more than 30 percent in comparison to shopping at traditional civilian stores.

“Our brave men and women who put their lives on the line deserve this,” added Sen. Corrado. “Providing disabled veterans with the opportunity to realize big savings is a small price to pay for their service. I urge Congress to swiftly enact this legislation.”

Corrado has a long history of supporting the needs of veterans and military personnel.

In her prior service as Passaic County Clerk, she played an active role on the Passaic Military Appreciation Month Committee, providing Gold Star Families and Blue Star Families with a Keepsake Memory Book honoring their fallen and active sons. Corrado also partnered with Gold Star Mothers and Blue Star Mothers to collect and send necessities to deployed military personnel.

As clerk, Corrado created a resource manual for the county’s veterans and hosted benefits and educational seminars for local members of the Armed Forces. Last year, she sponsored the Socks for Soldiers and Veterans campaign, collecting over 6,000 pairs of socks for active and retired military members.

Sen. Corrado continues to serve on the SOS Vets Stakeholder Group, a North Jersey veteran’s organization representing seven counties.
