Councilmembers Frank Gilmore and James Solomon Sponsor Resolution to Honor National Gun Violence Awareness Day
JERSEY CITY NJ – Today, Councilmembers Frank Educational Gilmore and James Solomon will sponsor a resolution to honor National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Jersey City. This resolution has been sponsored annually, but this year’s renewal is particularly significant given the recent mass shootings in Uvalde, TX and Buffalo, NY.
The two councilmen will present the resolution to Pamela Johnson, the Executive Director of the Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition Movement, and Robyn Gorman, the Director of Hudson Partnership CMO. The Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition Movement, is a grassroots anti-gun violence group connecting the community with mutual aid and resources. Hudson Partnership CMO connects victims of gun violence to resources and services, working to build citywide coalitions to combat gun violence.
“I think this resolution is a step in the right direction with regards to highlighting gun violence in our community,” said Ward F Councilman Frank Gilmore. “It’s also important to acknowledge that this resolution doesn’t just speak to mass shootings but also includes the everyday gun violence that plagues our city.”
“I am proud to honor those members of our community working relentlessly to combat gun violence and its effects,” said Ward E Councilman James Solomon. “It is the most pressing problem facing our city and it is my moral obligation to do everything in my power to combat it – by funding and supporting the communities that are harmed by it.”
Councilman Solomon has sponsored resolutions honoring National Gun Violence Awareness Day annually since he entered office in 2018. Councilman Frank Gilmore has worked directly with gun violence groups in Jersey City, and pledged to co-sponsor this resolution in his first year in office.
