New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie has released the following statement regarding the death of Congressman Elijah Cummings:

“Today, we mourn the loss of one of the most iconic figures, not only in our Democratic Party but in our country. Congressman Cummings spent his life fighting for those without a voice and standing up for the dignity of all. Elijah’s story is that of someone who started from the bottom and rose up to become one of the most impactful and courageous legislators of our time. While the struggle for equality continues, Elijah’s activism and leadership has moved our country more toward the side of justice, and inspired younger generations to carry the baton forward. Our country has lost a great leader and we must all continue to honor his legacy by always standing up for our values.”
