CUSTIS JOINS #IMWITHHER COALITION
Calls Torres, Boucher and Reyes-Morton Courageous Leaders; Co-Signs Independent Thinking to Change Camden’s Culture
(CAMDEN, NJ) – Camden School Advisory Board Member and former mayoral candidate Elton Custis today stepped out and announced he’s joining the #IMWITHHER Coalition – formed by Council members Marilyn Torres, Shaneka Boucher, and Felisha Reyes-Morton, calling the trio courageous leaders who deserve our respect and attention.
“Honestly, it’s inspiring for me to see these ladies stepping out and stepping up for our community like they are,” said Elton Custis, who ran against the Democratic Party machine in the June 2021 primary. “If you know our culture in Camden and truly understand what’s at stake, then you will instantly get that it took a tremendous amount of courage for them to do this.”
Torres, Boucher and Reyes-Morton have been critical of the council leadership and the decisions they have made as of late, including the reappointment of Conner Strong and the watering down and delay of the cannabis ordinance.
“Elton’s work and reputation in our community is both well documented and respected,” said Councilwoman Marilyn Torres. “We’re thrilled to have him join our coalition and help us shape the future of Camden.”
“If you get engaged and really listen to what these women leaders are saying, they’re fighting for the hard working men and women of Camden, not the political elite,” said Custis, who received more votes than any other challenger to the Democratic Party line in recent Camden primary elections.
“I ran because I believe that we can put residents first by putting residents’ issues at the top of the agenda,” said Custis. “That’s exactly what council members Torres, Boucher and Reyes-Morton are fighting for.”
