AVALON, NJ – David Richter, the Republican candidate running to represent New Jersey’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, has qualified for “On the Radar” status, the initial step of the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Young Guns program.  Richter is one of 75 “On the Radar” candidates nationwide but the only one from New Jersey’s Second District.

The NRCC’s Young Guns program mentors and supports candidates in races across the country and works to provide them with the necessary tools to run successful, winning campaigns against their Democratic opponents.  The program requires candidates to work towards specific goals and meet benchmarks throughout the election cycle to ensure their campaigns remain competitive, well-funded and communicative within their districts.

“We’re thrilled to add these compelling, hard-working candidates to our Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer (R-MN).  “While Nancy Pelosi and the socialist Democrats continue to focus on the baseless impeachment of President Trump, we will be working with our candidates to take back the majority in 2020,” added Emmer.

“Today’s announcement by the NRCC confirms the momentum behind our campaign to unseat Jeff Van Drew next year,” said Richter.  “Over the past few months, I have been focused on supporting state and local candidates who are on next week’s ballot, while at the same time significantly outraising my opponents and building tremendous support from party leaders and elected officials throughout the district,” Richter added.

During the third quarter, Richter raised an impressive $413,000 and finished with $390,000 cash on hand.

“It is imperative that our party nominates a candidate who can run a well-funded, first-class campaign against Jeff Van Drew, who is one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents in Congress,” said Richter.  “I am the only Republican in this race that has the ability to run that type of campaign against Van Drew and defeat him next November,” Richter added.

President Donald Trump won the district by five points in 2016 and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin won it by ten points in 2018, while Van Drew barely won the district with only 52.9% of the vote despite outspending his Republican opponent by more than six-to-one.

“Despite running as an alleged conservative Democrat, Van Drew has voted with Speaker Nancy Pelosi 91% of the time.  He is voting against the interests of small and family-owned businesses, he is voting against the interests of law-abiding gun owners, and he is voting against the interests of working families.  The citizens of South Jersey need a real conservative in Congress who will work hard for smaller government, lower taxes and secure borders, and who will fight to protect, not undermine, their constitutional rights,” added Richter.

New Jersey’s Second District includes all of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties as well as parts of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Ocean counties.  The Republican primary is scheduled for June 2, 2020.

Richter is the former CEO of global construction management firm Hill International.  During his 22 years at the company, Hill grew from a struggling family business with 300 employees into a global public company with 4,300 employees.  A lifelong Republican, Richter grew up in and has spent most of his life living and working in South Jersey.  He earned two bachelor’s degrees and a law degree from Penn as well as master’s degrees from Oxford and Harvard.  Richter and his wife Michelle, who have been married for 20 years, are the parents of four daughters.
