Death of Barry Winston, Former Democratic Municipal Chair of Fair Lawn

Barry Winston, who served as Fair Lawn Democratic Municipal Chairman for 18 years and was instrumental in making Fair Lawn a Democratic bastion of Bergen County, died on April 15.  He was 78.  He served as chairman of the Fair Lawn Planning Board for eight years, as a board member of a non-profit nursing home and was Past Grand Chancellor of the New Jersey branch of the Knights of Pythias, America’s oldest non-sectarian fraternal order.  In his reminiscences of his friend Barry, former State Senator Bob Gordon noted that he never would have been able to launch his political career without Barry Winston’s support.  “Barry was there when I first ran for the Fair Lawn Council 40 years ago, and he was a key ally and counsel throughout my legislative career.  He was drawn to politics for the best of reasons—not because he had any interest in exercising local power, but because he saw it as a way to improve his community.  His passing is a great loss for Fair Lawn.”
