TRENTON, N.J. –  Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips backed retaining a religious exemption to school vaccine requirements at an Assembly session Monday.

“This unconstitutional legislation attempts to write freedom of religion out of the law,” DePhillips (R-Bergen) said before the vote. “In America, no government can abridge freedom of religion – and take it away from the people.”

The controversial bill (A3818) would only allow schoolchildren to be exempted from immunization requirements for medical reasons, eliminating the religious exemption now on the books. It was approved by the Democratic-led Assembly with a 45-25 vote.
