In a crowded field with several elected officials and machine-backed candidates, outsider and progressive candidate Dr. Adam Hamawy wins closely watched primary election.
PRINCETON, NJ – Tonight, Dr. Adam Hamawy won his race in the closely watched NJ-12 Democratic Primary. Voters across the political spectrum have resonated with Dr. Adam Hamawy’s background – a doctor, veteran, 9/11 responder, and volunteer surgeon in war and disaster zones, including Gaza – and his message of “healthcare, not bombs.”
Dr. Hamawy’s campaign raised north of 1.4 million dollars — twice as much as the next closest opponent reported — and built the broadest coalition of any candidate, earning endorsements of over 30 organizations and elected leaders like Senators Tammy Duckworth and Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC. Tonight, celebrating amongst hundreds of supporters, Dr. Adam Hamawy took the victory stage:
“We were told that an outsider couldn’t win. That we couldn’t compete. Well, I think we competed. Together, we made it clear you never need to ask for permission to fight for justice. In every corner of this district, we built a movement of people who were fed up.
“Fed up with a government that serves the billionaires and corporations, but never us.
Fed up with an economy where families work hard and still can’t make ends meet.
Fed up with masked thugs abducting our neighbors. And fed up with a system that funds genocide while trapping us in debt just to get medical care.
“I am going to Congress to fight for you – for healthcare, not bombs, to abolish ICE, and to unrig the economy once and for all. I will never take money from corporate PACs or AIPAC. I will always vote my conscience – I will be beholden to no one. For my whole life, I have tried to tackle the crises we face with my hands, treating patients. But I am a surgeon. I don’t like putting Band-Aids on bullet wounds. It’s time for some preventative care. To get my patients – and all of us – the care they need: We are going to change the very system that’s hurting us.”
On the desperate smears and hate directed at Dr. Hamawy in the final weeks of the campaign, he had this to say:
“Let me be absolutely clear with you all and everyone watching today: there was once a time when this may have worked. Where racist and anti-Muslim attacks could swing an election. That era of American politics is over.”
Dr. Adam Hamawy is a father, husband, humanitarian, surgeon, veteran, and small business owner running to represent New Jersey’s 12th District where he was raised and is raising his children. Since completing his service, Adam has spent the last decade building a successful medical practice in the Princeton area, while also dedicating more than 30 years volunteering to treat patients in overwhelmed hospitals, war zones, and disaster areas at home and abroad.
