End Citizens United Stands with Andy Kim Against Kate Gibbs
End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after Kate Gibbs announced her candidacy in New Jersey’s third congressional district:
“New Jerseyans want representation that can’t be bought and that’s exactly what they have in Rep. Andy Kim. Andy is a reformer who earned voters’ trust in 2018 by rejecting corporate PAC money and running a transparent campaign that relied on small-dollar donors. In his short time in Congress, he’s already changing the status quo in Washington by helping to pass the most comprehensive anti-corruption, ethics, and money-in-politics reform bill since Watergate.
“By not disclosing her donors to the FEC and campaigning in secrecy over the last two months, Kate Gibbs kept voters in the dark about who is funding her campaign and how she plans to advance their interests. Kate Gibbs was hand-picked by national Republicans and their special interest donors, and is a typical politician who will only reinforce the rigged system in Washington. New Jerseyans want more — not less — transparency in elections.
“Unlike Kate Gibbs, Andy Kim will continue to run a transparent grassroots campaign that’s focused on New Jersey and powered by small-dollar donors, and End Citizens United will be there with him along the way.”
ECU endorsed Rep. Kim’s re-election campaign in March as part of its first round of endorsements for the 2020 election cycle. The endorsements include reformers who ran on a platform of rooting out corruption and getting big money out of politics in the 2018 cycle, won competitive races in swing districts, and showed leadership in the passage of the For the People Act (H.R.1).
As a candidate for Congress in 2018, Andy Kim led a coalition of 107 House candidates who sent a letter to the House of Representatives calling for a government and election reform bill to be the first item on the agenda in the 116th Congress. After getting sworn-in, one of the very first pieces of legislation Representative Kim co-sponsored was the For the People Act (H.R. 1). By supporting this once-in-a-generation legislation, Rep. Kim delivered on campaign promises to end the dominance of big money, root out corruption, strengthen our democracy, and restore faith in government.
