ESSEX COUNTY SHERIFF CANDIDATE JOHN C. ARNOLD, JR.
WILL REQUEST THE IMMEDIATE RECUSAL OF THE ESSEX COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT
OF ELECTIONS DUE TO CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Essex County Superintendent of Elections Patty Spango is the Mother of
Essex County Sheriff’s Chief and Fontoura Loyalist James Spango
Newark, NJ – May 10, 2021 – John C. Arnold, Jr., former Newark Deputy Police Director and current Democratic candidate for Essex County Sheriff in the upcoming Primary Election, will formally make
a request to the current Superintendent of Elections that she immediately recues herself and cease
any and all involvement in the June 8th election due to conflict of interest.
Patty Spango, Essex County Superintendent of Elections and Commissioner of (Voter) Registrations
is the mother of Chief James Spango of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Spango also happens
to be a close friend to current Sheriff Armando Fontoura also running in the June election.
Chief Spango is #2 in the Sheriff’s Office whose position as Chief is dedicated to and reliant upon
Sheriff Fontoura being victorious in the June 8th election.
In his position, Chief Spango has the following duties: Overseeing the entire day-to-day
Operations of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office; Acts as Business Administrator for the Sheriff’s
Office; Overseeing the Budget, Labor Relations, Purchasing, and Personnel.
“To ensure a fair and impartial election and the preserve the sanctity of the Democratic voting
processes, there must be an avoidance of any appearance of impropriety and possibility of
fraud.”, John Arnold said.
John Arnold continued to say, “This Sheriff’s election has the Essex County Democratic machine
fearful that Fountora will lose due to the overwhelming support I have been garnering from all
areas of the county. As history has taught us, fear pushes people to do things they might not
normally do. It is in the best interest of the voters to avoid any possibility of fraud similar to what
took place in 2009 regarding mail-in ballots.”
“Because her son’s livelihood and position are predicated upon the outcome of this election,
in the interest of the voters, Ms. Spango should recues herself immediately and remove the conflict
of interest that clearly exists.“
Patty Spango is the former West Orange Council President. She was nominate and
appointed to serve in her current position as Essex County Superintendent of Elections
and Commissioner of Registration, by Governor Phil Murphy early this year.
Prior to being appointed Superintendent Spango served as the Deputy Superintendent
since 2015.
