NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (May 2, 2023) – New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC), the state’s largest community development financial institution (CDFI), is pleased to welcome Dr. Paul Alexander to the organization’s board of directors. Dr. Alexander is currently Executive Vice President, Chief Health Equity and Transformation Officer at RWJBarnabas Health, where he is responsible for the health system’s social mission developing strategies to promote the health and wellness of the communities served, including employees. He was recently recognized as a Black healthcare leader to know by Becker’s Hospital Review.

His knowledge and understanding of community health will greatly support the work NJCC is leading in the community and industry,” said Bernel Hall, President and CEO of NJCC. “Dr. Alexander’s expertise and experience working in health care and health insurance adds an invaluable perspective to our board. He’s committed to improving the quality of care and service delivered to underserved communities.”

Dr. Alexander joins eight existing board members, including executives from JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock Alternative Investors, Wells Fargo, Hudson County Economic Development Corp., St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society of Camden and Rutgers Business School.

“I’m very pleased to become a member of New Jersey Community Capital’s board of directors to support the organization’s mission and contribute to disadvantaged and underserved communities,” Dr. Alexander said. “The connection between financial status and health is a primary factor in improving BIPOC communities. The absence of funding leads to poor health, which reduces the ability to get an education and to work, in turn, hindering the ability to be a community contributor. By joining NJCC, we can now better prepare underrepresented communities for the future by listening to them and addressing their needs through a holistic approach.”

Prior to joining RWJBH, Dr. Alexander was Chief Medical Officer for Government Programs at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and was instrumental in the advancement of quality of care and service delivered to New Jersey residents enrolled in Medicaid, Medicare or dual-eligible programs. He has held leadership positions at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, UnitedHealthcare, Health Partners of Philadelphia and Independence Blue Cross. Dr. Alexander completed his undergraduate premedical studies and holds a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University. He is a Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine graduate, a former Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and a Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute at the Wharton School.
