By a margin of 67% to 33% on Election Day last week, New Jersey voters overwhelmingly told Trenton how they feel.

I cringe now because it’s the up to the Legislature to get this right.

Chances are, they won’t.

Having worked in the criminal justice system for 10 years before entering academia, I saw firsthand the impact of marijuana laws when I visited the Hudson County jail in Kearny and the Essex County jail in Newark to sit down with probationers, clients or defendants.

I saw how catastrophic it was to them.

It ruined their lives for something that quite frankly is harmless.

This ongoing punishment for decades has been costly and unnecessary.

I, for one, have been happy to see legislators tackling decriminalization in recent months, but there has to be a consensus too.

We have to stop putting people in jail for this.

It’s a waste of time and resources.

We all know there’s no correlation between violent crime and marijuana usage.

I’ve seen plenty of people get high and all they want to do is sit around and do nothing.

There is no motivation to commit crime, but you know what there is with ?

Harder drugs.

Let’s wake up folks.
