Following Cuomo report, Katie Brennan urges action on stalled NJ sexual harassment laws

TRENTON (August 9, 2021)–Katie Brennan on Monday urged legislators and the Governor’s office to take swift action on three stalled pieces of legislation that she has championed that are focused on sexual harassment in state government.

“We made great strides to protect survivors and increase access to justice. We made great strides to protect people in the workplace,” said Brennan. “Now, we need the executive branch, legislative branch, and campaigns to hold themselves accountable. This is about protection, but even more importantly, it is about prevention.”

S-3389 would require adoption of and training on anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy by campaign committees, and would create an Office on Discrimination and Harassment Prevention to handle claims/investigations.

S-3077 would require the revision of State Legislature’s anti-harassment policy and specifies the investigation of discrimination and harassment complaint process.

S-3078 would codify the State Workplace Anti-Harassment and Discrimination Policy.

“Plenty of legislators, and Gov. Murphy himself, spoke about how my sexual assault helped highlight the urgent need for change in New Jersey government and politics,” said Brennan. “Now more than ever, it’s time for them to make good on their promises and take action–before even one more woman goes through what I did.”
