Former NJ Staffer takes spokesperson role at DHS

Liza Acevedo, spokesperson for NJ Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, is going to work for 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro as the campaign’s deputy press secretary.

Liza Acevedo is a communications professional who has experience as an on-record spokesperson and in strategic and crisis communications.

Prior to joining the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Liza was a volunteer staff member on the Biden-Harris Transition and most recently served as a Director at SKDK in the office of public affairs. In 2019, Liza joined the presidential campaign of former HUD Secretary Julián Castro, serving as his Deputy National Press Secretary and Press Secretary for his wife, Erica Castro. Prior to her national role, Liza served at the state and local levels of government as Spokesperson and Strategic Communications Adviser for New Jersey Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Deputy Press Secretary for Governor Phil Murphy. In addition, Liza also worked in the Office of Senator Michael Gianaris as the Director of Communications.

Liza is a native New Yorker and currently resides in the Washington, D.C. area. She holds a bachelors in Economics from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.
