Former Obama Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson Endorses Brendan Gill for Congress
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Today, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced his endorsement of Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill in the race for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.
"I am endorsing my friend and neighbor Brendan Gill for Congress," said Secretary Jeh Johnson. “While the department I once led seems focused on deportations and nothing more, we need officials in Washington who remain dedicated to homeland security in general. This includes cybersecurity, aviation security, maritime security, response to natural disasters and much more. Brendan has devoted his life to public service. He has been endorsed by a number of law enforcement and public safety organizations and many more. Today, I add my name and voice to the long list of those who want to see Brendan in Congress."
Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill expressed his deep gratitude for the endorsement, noting the significance of earning support from a respected national leader who served in both the Obama and Clinton Administrations.
“I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of Secretary Johnson, a decorated public servant who has protected our nation with strength and moral clarity,” said Gill. “This campaign is about restoring faith in government, defending our freedoms, and ensuring opportunity for every family in New Jersey’s 11th District. I’m proud to have Secretary Johnson by my side as we fight for those values.”
Jeh Charles Johnson, a Montclair resident, served as Secretary of Homeland Security for President Barack Obama from 2013-2017. He also served as General Counsel of the Department of Defense from 2009-2012.
Gill, who currently serves as an Essex County Commissioner, has built a reputation for effective, community-rooted leadership and progressive advocacy on issues including public safety, affordable housing, quality public education, and economic opportunity. Secretary Johnson joins Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones, CWA Local 1031, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA), representing more than 6,000 firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers across the state, and other local and county officials committed to keeping communities safe.
