Striving for Jersey-friendly Yards

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY (January 17, 2022) — Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) announced today they are offering a free, three-part Zoom webinar series on the benefits of using native pollinator plants. The first program, “Landscaping for a Healthy Environment – Jersey-Friendly Yards” takes place on Tuesday, January 25, 7-8 PM. Registration and additional information can be found at GreatSwamp.org or call 973-538-3500.
“Our goal is to help educate New Jersey residents on the many benefits of choosing native pollinator plants.” Said Hazel England, GSWA Director of Education, Outreach, and Land Stewardship. “Gardening for pollinators and other beneficial insects creates multi-season beauty in your yard while supporting our diverse and rich insect population that’s critical in sustaining our ecosystems and agriculture.”
The webinar will focus how landscaping with native pollinators creates a healthy foundation of soil, conserves water, attracts and supports wildlife, and adds beauty and interest to your home landscape. Guest speaker, Becky Laboy from the Ocean County Soil Conservation District and the Jersey-Friendly Yards initiative, will share helpful information on how to put these ideas into practice. Ms. Laboy will also discuss great ways to prepare for creating new native beds this coming spring.
GSWA is offering two additional webinars leading up to their 2nd Annual Native Pollinator Plant Sale taking place April 1-22:
• Webinar #2 – Pollinator Insects: Tuesday, February 22, 7-8 PM
• Webinar #3 – Native Plant Sale Product Overview: Tuesday, April 1, 12-1 PM

“We will offer a full selection of attractively priced native perennials and grasses with simple guidance for planting delightfully alive pollinator gardens that will thrive with minimal care,” said Ms. England. “The addition of every single native plant makes a difference and creates a little oasis for these important pollinators.”

GSWA is collaborating with 24 community partners for their plant sale. Additional information can be found in GSWA’s first edition of their new Make Way for Pollinators newsletter found at GreatSwamp.org/blog.
