Genova Burns passes the Championship off to Brach Eichler in 2024 Edition of The Battle of the Barristers

Bloomfield, NJ—August 8, 2024—In a weather-defying Battle of the Barristers, Genova Burns LLC hosted the 2024 after winning the Championship in 2023.  Brach Eichler has emerged as the champions, securing their place as hosts for the 2025 tournament. The annual event, which gathers law firms and departments from across New Jersey for a day of spirited competition, was held at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, despite challenging weather conditions.

The 2024 championship match saw Brach Eichler face off against McCarter & English in a nail-biting finale, with Brach Eichler ultimately claiming victory with a 13-8 win. The tournament, which featured ten teams, was a showcase of skill, teamwork, and resilience, with participants braving the elements to deliver an unforgettable day of softball.

“We are incredibly proud to have won the 2024 Battle of the Barristers,” said Allen J. Popowitz, Esq., Brach Eichler, LLC Member and team coach. “It was a challenging day, but our team’s determination paid off. We are honored to host the 2025 tournament and look forward to continuing this great tradition of bringing together the legal community for a day of fun, competition, and camaraderie.”

Angelo J. Genova, Chairman of Genova Burns, also shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “It has been a privilege for Genova Burns to participate and occasionally win the Battle of the Barristers over the years. This event gives Firms and legal departments a chance to give back to the community.”   Genova continued “All proceeds go the Greater Newark Fresh air fund, so its competition with a good cause.  As this year’s hosts, we really tried to make it a firm family day so everyone got to enjoy the day.  “

The 2024 tournament was a testament to the dedication of all participants, with teams from firms Prudential, Carella Byrne, Mandelbaum Barrett, Fox Rothschild, Genova Burns, Lowenstein Sandler, Gibbons P.C., Cole Schotz, and McCarter & English taking part. Despite the rain and a few minor setbacks, the event was a resounding success.

Special thanks go out to Mayor Ras J. Baraka and his team for their support, as well as to Justin P. Walder, Esq. who had the honor of throwing the completing the first pitch of the day.

While Genova Burns team, led by Coach David D’Olivo, gym teacher and baseball coach from Lenape Valley High School fell short on runs, the camaraderie built from the event was evident.  Ed J. Bonett, Esq, relative newcomer to the Firm who works out of the Media, PA office said it was a great experience.  “The Firm included my son and he and I had a blast.  The Firm worked as a true team, and built some relationships that will likely assist us all off the field as well.”

Final tabulations are being compiled with the help of Newark Day Center. As Brach Eichler prepares to host the 2025 Battle of the Barristers, Genova Burns LLC remains committed to upholding the spirit and tradition of this much-anticipated annual event.
