Gottheimer Announces Community Briefing From DEP Commissioner Regarding Waste Mountain in Vernon

Meeting Set For May 20 at Vernon Township High School

GLEN ROCK, NJ – On Monday, May 1, 2019, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) announced that New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Catherine McCabe will deliver a briefing on the Waste Mountain at 3 Silver Spruce Dr. The briefing will take place on May 20th at 6 p.m. at Vernon Township High School. Commissioner McCabe and her team will begin with a briefing on the situation and then take questions from the public.

“After pushing for a briefing by the DEP in Vernon following this latest round of news, I am very glad that briefing will finally take place on May 20 at 6pm at Vernon Township High School,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “The people of Vernon deserve to know whether their air and water are clean and their families are safe from lead and any carcinogens. I look forward to a productive conversation about the steps being taken to clean up the Waste Mountain at 3 Silver Spruce Dr.”

The briefing comes on the heels of an NJ.com story that detailed the results of testing finally done after months of pressure by Gottheimer, local elected officials, and the residents of Vernon. The tests revealed “unsafe levels” of “chemicals linked to cancer and other toxicants” in the Waste Mountain.
