Governor Murphy Directs the Lowering of U.S. and New Jersey Flags in Honor of Sergeant William Rivers

TRENTON— Governor Phil Murphy today signed Executive Order No. 353, ordering U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in honor of United States Army Reserve Sergeant William Jerome Rivers. A Willingboro native, Rivers was among the three U.S. Army soldiers killed in a terrorist attack at a Jordan military base on Sunday, January 28.

“Our servicemembers are the best of us, bravely putting their lives on the line to protect our nation and our democracy,” said Governor Murphy. “Sergeant Rivers was a decorated soldier leaving behind an incredible legacy embodying our American ideals, and his sacrifice serves as a reminder of the great debt we owe our military families. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Sergeant Rivers, Specialist Sanders, Specialist Moffett, and we are wishing a quick recovery to the dozens of U.S. soldiers who were injured in this heinous attack.”
