Greg Vartan Announces Run for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District

SUMMIT, NJ — Today, Greg Vartan announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. Vartan, the Summit Council President, and a former first responder, announced that he is running because “we need a representative who understands the values of our district, isn’t afraid to stand up for them, and has a track record of getting results.”

“What’s happening in Washington, DC is an emergency. Tom Kean, Jr. said he was a moderate but his voting record revealed the truth: he is a MAGA extremist. As an EMT, then an elected official, I’ve been responding to emergencies my whole life. I’m the only Democrat with a record of winning and the strongest candidate to defeat Kean.”

Greg Vartan currently serves as Summit Council President – his hometown, where he represents Ward II on the Common Council. As a fourth-generation resident of Summit, New Jersey, Vartan knows firsthand the struggles that residents of the 7th district face.

“I was raised to believe if you can help, then you should. That’s been the guiding principle of my life.  I have served as a first responder and in local government and delivered results. In local government, there is no choice but to work together, across the aisle to solve problems from protecting health and safety, building roads, and making sure our local economy survived, recovered, and thrived after the pandemic. That’s the approach I will bring to Congress.”

Vartan is a proud graduate of Summit Public Schools and has dedicated his life to giving back to the community that raised him. From 2016 to 2018, Vartan served as a member of the Planning Board and was its liaison to the Environmental Commission. For twelve years, he volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician on the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, and was formerly Crew Chief of the Sunday Night Crew, and a member of its Board of Trustees. Vartan participated in the inaugural class of the Summit Police Department Youth Academy and stayed on at the request of the organizing officers to assist with the planning and execution of the program for the next four years.

As a member of the Common Council, Vartan’s accomplishments include responsible budgeting, supporting law enforcement, supporting equality of opportunity in education and investment in improvements to facilities and programs. While Council President, Vartan has also overseen several road and sidewalk projects, the installation of traffic and pedestrian safety measures, investments in recreation and a commitment to increased sustainability. Since Vartan joined Council, the city has also been committed to creating greater inclusion and celebrating diversity, hosting the first several Pride, Latin heritage, Juneteenth, Asian American Pacific Islander heritage events, and an expansion of the Hometown Heroes program honoring servicemembers and veterans.

Serving in local government has put Vartan on the front lines of the issues that matter most to New Jerseyans. In Congress, Vartan will continue to work across the aisle to deliver results for New Jersey families.

Vartan lives in Summit with his wife, Megan.
