Hamilton Mayor Jeff Martin Statement on U.S. Senator Bob Menendez’s $500 Billion Bipartisan Proposal to Fund State & Local Governments

“I applaud Senator Menendez’s bipartisan proposal to establish a $500 billion fund to support state and local governments on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Both state and local governments across the country are spending a significant amount while experiencing declining revenues as a result of necessary measures taken to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Mayor Jeff Martin.  “I was the first mayor to recognize and openly speak about the drop in municipal revenues as a result of the necessary stay-at-home order.  It was a month ago today that I announced to Hamilton Township staff the anticipation of a significant decline in revenues and how it could impact our ability to continue serving our residents while ensuring our township’s finances are on solid footing.  The senator’s proposal, which incorporates robust and flexible funding, would help municipalities, like Hamilton, to continue to fight COVID-19 as well as ensure continuation of essential services.”

“Rightfully, Congress immediately stepped up to support individual Americans and small businesses.  For mayors like myself to continue protecting the health of our residents and fight COVID-19, we now need support from Congress and Senator Menendez is stepping up to fight for New Jersey in our toughest moment. Not only would his proposal bridge shortfalls, it would target the hardest hit areas, like New Jersey. I hope Congress considers Senator Menendez’s proposal in the next stimulus package to provide much needed relief.”
