| HAMILTON, NJ – On Thursday, February 3rd Hamilton Mayor Jeff Martin and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Committee presented three Hamilton Township senior-year students with the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service and Scholarships Awards. These students each received a $500 scholarship and were selected by the Tribute Committee based on their dedication to public service and clear commitment to academic excellence.
“While we were not able to gather in person for our annual Tribute ceremony in January due to COVID-19, I am happy that we as a Township have still found a way to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and showcase the strong spirit of community service our young people have,” said Mayor Jeff Martin. “I am sure that Zainab, Sherlyn and Samantha will all continue to excel academically and through their service to our area. We wish them the best of luck in college and in all of their future endeavors.”
Zainab Iqbal, one of the 2021 awardees, is a senior at Nottingham High School. Having committed to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, she plans to study forensic psychology to eventually become a psychologist herself. As a member of the National Honor Society, Zainab also partakes in the peer leadership program, and works with the Helping Hands Foundation. Because of this experience, Zainab hopes to become proficient in Arabic so that she can work with refugees in her career.
The second Scholarship recipient, Sherlyn Rodriguez, is a senior at Trenton Catholic Preparatory Academy. With a GPA of 3.95, Sherlyn balances her academics with several extracurricular activities at school – she is a member of the softball team, cheer squad, and robotics team. Sherlyn is also a dedicated volunteer at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, CYO Broad Street Summer Camp, and at the Mercer County Park. She plans to go to school to be an architect or engineer.
The third Scholarship Award was given to Samantha Marusky, a senior at Steinert High School. Samantha is a senior at Steinert High with a GPA of 4.4, serves as a Peer Leader and is a member of the soccer, spring winter and track teams, and is part of the Student Government Association, Key Club, as well as the National and Spanish Honor Societies. Her community service includes working with the local VFW centers, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, local nursing homes, and currently working towards her Gold Award from the Girl Scouts. Her teachers describe her as a thoughtful and bright born leader.
The Annual Community Service Award Winner will be celebrated at a later date this year. The Tribute Committee looks forward to honoring Dr. King and additional scholarship recipients in person again in 2023.
