Hudson Republicans Rethink Redistricting

Jersey City-With some Democrats trying to create a one faction of one-party state while most New Jerseyans are busy shopping for Christmas presents, Hudson County Republicans have some ideas that will actually improve representation.

“Making districts ‘competitive’ based on federal races that have nothing to do with state politics isn’t what is going to solve the challenges we have. New Jersey specifically holds elections in odd years to focus on state issues. As the first Hispanic Republican elected to the Assembly I know that we do best when we focus on local concerns. A party should receive as close to as possible the percentage of seats as the percentage of vote that it gets. Since 2011, the Democrats have gotten almost 10% more seats than they get in votes. Gerrymandering more Democratic seats will not only be bad for competitiveness, it will also hurt minority representation.” Hudson GOP Chair Jose Arango stated.

“This proposal is not about competitiveness it is settling scores and exaggerating the support Democrats have in New Jersey. It also disenfranchises unaffiliated voters who are still the largest group in the state and like to see true competition between Democrats and Republicans. Few people are happy with New Jersey government over the past 20 years, does anyone seriously think this will make it better?” questioned Hudson GOP Exec Director Dan Beckelman.

The Hudson GOP thinks redistricting needs to change but to actually reflect how people in New Jersey vote not how political bosses dictate.
