Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey Expands Work in Building Relations in the Broader Community

Jewish Federation is excited to announce the expansion of our community relations work by welcoming Alana Burman as our new Director, Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC), and Dalia Zahger Levy in a new position of Director, Civic & Community Engagement. These positions aspire to grow our external relations work, support the Jewish community through legislative education and advocacy, and establish lasting partnerships in the broader, non-Jewish community.

Alana Burman comes to us with a background in public safety, civil rights, and education in the areas of antisemitism and bias. She brings experience from the public service sector, along with strategic organizing and advocacy at both the state and federal level. Prior to joining Federation, Alana was the Associate Regional Director in New York /New Jersey for the Anti-Defamation League where she led grassroots civil rights partnerships and programs.

Dalia Zahger Levy grew up in Israel, where she served in the Israeli Defense Forces in field intelligence. After her service, she attended Columbia University where she founded the Students Supporting Israel chapter to fight antisemitism and anti-Zionism on campus. Prior to joining Federation, Dalia was the Northeast Regional Director for the Maccabee Task Force.  Dalia has spoken in community centers, high schools, synagogues, and on Capitol Hill to promote awareness and activism against antisemitism on college campuses and beyond. She also holds a master’s degree in Counter Terrorism and Homeland Security.

These new professionals join the Director of Jewish Community Security, Tim Torell, in forming a well-rounded External Relations team at Jewish Federation.  We look forward to serving the needs of our community through their important work.

According to Jason M. Shames, CEO, “In today’s world, cooperation and collaboration are the key ingredients to mitigate and dispel hate and bias. Both Alana and Dalia are enthusiastic about combining their efforts to bring more awareness and broader cooperation for fighting prejudice and hatred in our community.”

Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey is dedicated to preserving, fostering, and securing a vibrant, local Jewish community for today and beyond.
