Jim Johnson, former Gubernatorial candidate, Endorses Michael Roth for Congress

LAMBERTVILLE, NJ – Today, in the home stretch before the primary election on Tuesday, June 2, Jim Johnson, lawyer, resident of Lambertville, and former Gubernatorial candidate, has endorsed Michael Roth for Congress in NJ-07.

Johnson has served in senior government and policy roles including Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Special Counsel to Governor Murphy, chair of the Brennan Center for Justice and Corporation Counsel of New York City.  He was second in the Democratic primary for Governor in 2017.

With great enthusiasm, Johnson stated the following, “Forty years ago, I worked on my first Congressional campaign and continued working on  national policy and politics, in and out of government, ever since. I even ran for Governor.  Michael Roth is one of the finest Congressional candidates I have ever met. He is precisely the candidate these times demand: he can fight, and he can build. We need both. And in Michael, we can elect a representative who will be ready on day one to lead in this time of crisis. It will be our good fortune, and a service to the nation, to send Michael in a time of unprecedented national need.

“Michael brings a career of service and deep experience to the task. He led at the U.S. Small  Business Administration through the pandemic, delivering nearly $1 trillion in funding nationwide — including to 200,000 New Jersey small businesses, saving 1 million jobs across the state. While he was there, I was serving as Corporation Council for NYC where I saw firsthand the impact of his work. It was both courageous and creative. Those qualities are needed in Washington right now.

“Michael oversaw the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), the largest public-private partnership  in world history. He worked with Congress to write and implement parts of the American Rescue  Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science  Act.

“Michael co-founded the Economic Opportunity Coalition, which consisted of eight federal  agencies who worked with 30 major companies and foundations, and a bipartisan group of 26 U.S. senators. At a time when many citizens despair of getting things done, Michael helped  catalyze and align tens of billions of private investments for affordable housing and 21st-century jobs.

“Michael’s record is stellar. His vision for the way forward gives me hope. Michael speaks  about the people in this district in a way that gives life to the humanity beyond statistics. He  understands that people are frustrated by the economy, disappointed by empty platitudes and  hopeful for better lives for themselves, their neighbors and their children. Michael’s five-point  economic plan takes a clear view of our challenges, including the failure of various versions of  trickle-down economics, and looks to make investments in what most families and communities in this district need. When we return him to Washington, he will have the credibility to put his ideas into action and he will have the knowledge to rebuild what the Trump Administration has worked so hard to tear down.

“I have no doubt that he will fight. I am certain he will build. Let’s give the nation a leader  prepared to serve from the moment he takes the oath of office. Join me in supporting Michael  Roth.”
