John Malchow Running for Watchung Borough Council

March 22, 2021 – Watchung – Lifelong resident and local attorney John Malchow has announced his candidacy for the Watchung Borough Council. Malchow will be running on the Democratic ticket with incumbent Council Member Daryl Eisenberg Knegten, both of whom were unanimously endorsed by the Watchung Democratic Committee. Malchow is seeking the council seat being vacated by current Council Member Lindsay Goodloe, who has indicated she will not seek reelection.

“Daryl Eisenberg Knegten and John Malchow represent the future of Watchung and the future of the Democratic Party. They are focused, experienced and energetic. As usual, this party offers the best and the brightest to serve our communities.” says Peg Schaffer, Vice Chair of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and Chair of the Somerset County Democratic Committee, in her endorsement of Malchow and Eisenberg Knegten.

“I grew up in Watchung and I am looking forward to raising my own family in this wonderful community.  If I am elected, I plan to help Watchung recover from this pandemic and see our residents thrive in years to come,” Malchow said. “I’m running because I care about building consensus as we work together to find practical solutions to the problems we face as a community.”

Malchow is one of five brothers all of whom grew up in Watchung. His parents, Fred and Sylvia Malchow, and grandparents, Alfred and Helen Rebmann, all lived in Watchung and were active members of the community.

John Malchow was active with Boy Scout Troop 32, the Watchung Little League, the Rescue Squad, and the schools. Malchow was elected in 2012 to the Watchung Board of Education, served as president of the Watchung Library Advisory Board, and worked for the Borough’s Recreation Department and the Public Works Department.

Malchow is a licensed attorney with Shaw Divorce & Family Law and practices throughout the state of New Jersey with a focus on family law. Prior to practicing, Malchow completed clerkships with the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas and the Superior Court of New Jersey in Somerville. He is an alumnus of WHRHS, Rutgers University, and Penn State Law. At Penn State Law, where he was president of the Student Bar Association, John helped design and implement a legal education course for incarcerated individuals, was a member of the Commission for LGBTQ+ Equity, and served on the board of the Centre County Women’s Resource Center.

“John Malchow is an exemplary Watchung citizen with great ideas for how to improve our hometown. His service to our community has been a common thread throughout his life,” said Council Member Daryl Eisenberg Knegten. “John has been a mentor and friend through the past several years and he brings to the table a unique perspective of Watchung’s past and a clear vision for the future.”

Every Tuesday evening from 7:30-8:30 p.m., the candidates will be holding office hours on Zoom for residents to share opinions, get involved, and converse.
