Elected Officials Must Honor Rapid Latinx Growth with Policies that Lift Up Immigrants & Communities of Color
(Passaic, NJ – August 13) Make the Road New Jersey released the following statement on behalf of its immigrant, Latinx, and working-class membership:
“Despite the Trump administration’s best efforts to undermine, terrorize and undercount immigrants and communities of color in the 2020 census, the data – while likely incomplete – shows that Black, Latinx, and Asian populations in New Jersey have grown in historic proportions. We demanded to be counted and to have our humanity recognized. Now, we urge our elected officials to reckon with our nearing majority – we deserve respect and dignity. New Jersey must embark on a fair and community-driven redistricting process,” said Rosa Huitzilin Lopez, Make the Road New Jersey
There are now more than 2 million Latinx people in New Jersey, an increase of nearly one million people since 2000.
