MAYOR BARAKA STATEMENT ON

MISTREATMENT OF HAITIAN ASYLUM SEEKERS

“As we watch the images of Haitian Asylum seekers being chased, whipped, and corralled by border patrol agents, it reminds us of an ugly time in American History that continues to haunt and revisit itself upon us. It becomes even more stark as we provide safety for those fleeing the Taliban, accompanied by voices of concern and moral authority. We argued immigration reform as children were caged like animals by a backward Trump policy. Then, we place that alongside the very loud silence as this country turns its head—and worse—pushes back violently against Black families fleeing as the world watches turmoil unfold in Haiti. The Biden Administration needs to act now!”
