Mayor Ted Green Endorses Congressman Payne

East Orange Mayor, Longtime Ally Supports Congressman

NEWARK, NJ – East Orange Mayor Ted Green is the latest prominent elected official to add his support to U.S. Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr.’s (D-Newark) re-election campaign. Representing one of the most reliably Democratic municipalities in the state, Mayor Green lauded Congressman Payne’s record of delivering significant federal funding for his community, allowing East Orange to fund critical programs without overburdening hard working local taxpayers.

“Congressman Payne is the leader we can count on to get the job done, which is why he was able to deliver over $40 million in federal grants and funding to East Orange in 2021,” said Mayor Green. “Congressman Payne understands the needs of our community, and he works hard every day to deliver federal resources to make our streets safer, provide more affordable housing, and deliver quality health care. East Orange is behind Congressman Payne 100% and our team will deliver for him in the Primary just like he’s always delivered for us in Congress.”

Congressman Payne’s commitment to communities like East Orange is evident in his work to deliver federal funding to the community. In Fiscal Year 2022 alone, Congressman Payne directed $40,523,317 to East Orange. These grants and other programs funded priorities like keeping police officers on the street and preventing layoffs through the American Rescue Plan, supporting the operations of a community behavioral health clinic, expanding access to public housing for low income residents and seniors and much more.

“Mayors like Ted Green are on the front lines of so many of the important issues facing our country today and I’m very proud to have his support,” said Congressman Payne. “East Orange is experiencing a renaissance thanks to Mayor Green’s leadership, but that fragile progress could be threatened without federal support and funding. I’ll always fight to support our communities by taking illegal guns off the streets, providing more funding for our police departments to hire minority officers, making sure people have access to affordable healthcare and housing and so much more. People are struggling and in need of our help, and I’ll continue working alongside local leaders like Mayor Green to make that happen.”

Congressman Payne has recently been endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund,  New Jersey Education Association, the Communications Workers of America NJ, Laborers’ International North America Eastern Region, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association and AFSCME NJ. He also recently announced the support of U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker as well as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.
