Mayor W. Reed Gusciora Issues Statement on the Passing of Former Mercer County Sheriff Gilbert W. Lugossy
Trenton, N.J. – I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Mercer County Sheriff Gilbert W. Lugossy, a true fixture in our community and in the civic life of Mercer County.
I had the privilege of knowing Gil for nearly 40 years, dating back to 1988, and throughout that time I was always struck by his accessibility, his wisdom, and his genuine love for public service. Whether in his role as Sheriff, a member of the State Parole Board, or in his many years of local involvement, Gil carried himself with steady leadership and a deep commitment to the people of Mercer County.
Even in his later years, Gil remained a constant presence at community and political events, rarely missing an opportunity to show up, often alongside his beloved wife, Helen. He brought with him a sense of warmth, good humor, and camaraderie that made him well respected and well-liked by all who knew him.
His decades of service from the Hamilton Township Board of Education to the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders, to his tenure as Sheriff, reflect a lifetime dedicated to giving back to the community that he loved so deeply.
Gil Lugossy represented a generation of public servants who believed in showing up, staying engaged, and serving with integrity. He will be greatly missed, not only for his contributions to public safety and government, but for the personal connections he maintained with so many across our county.
On behalf of the City of Trenton, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
