Morris Plains, New Jersey, Woman Arrested for Stealing Police Vehicle

Trenton, N.J. – Trenton Police Director Sheilah A. Coley today announced that a woman who allegedly stole a police vehicle in downtown Trenton and led law enforcement on a chase through Hopewell Township has been taken into custody.

At approximately 5:41 p.m. on May 29, 2021, Cherrelle Cooper, 30, of Morris Plains, New Jersey, allegedly stole an idle police cruiser that was parked on E. State Street in Trenton. Cooper then led law enforcement on a pursuit down Route 29 northbound into Hopewell Township.

The pursuit ended at Washington Crossing Road and Bear Tavern Road when the suspect crashed into a utility pole. Cooper was taken into custody and is being treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Afterwards, she will be transported to TPD Police Headquarters and processed on several charges.

While the police vehicle was totaled, no one else was seriously hurt. The investigation is ongoing. The incident is also being examined by the Internal Affairs Unit.

These allegations are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
