Mosquera Statement on Assembly Women and Children Committee Meeting Regarding Domestic Violence Legislation

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera (D-Camden, Gloucester), Chair of the Assembly Women & Children Committee made the following remarks during Monday’s meeting regarding legislation to help victims of domestic violence:

“Domestic violence is an issue affecting far too many of our residents, with nearly 60,000 reported incidents in 2019 alone. Women and children are especially impacted by violence in the home, and live in constant fear of the very people in the very place they should be able to trust the most.

“Tragically, the problem has likely only gotten worse as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns that confined people to their homes, extended isolation from outside support and the immense stress of last year may have all contributed to an increase in domestic violence, but a decrease in reporting.

“New Jersey needs to be able to support the victims of domestic violence living in our communities. The bills we are considering here today will help provide that support and make a difference in countless lives. Thank you as always to my fellow Assembly members for sponsoring this critical legislation.”
