Mosquera Statement on Assembly Women and Children Committee Meeting Regarding Sexual Assault Legislation
(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera (D-Camden, Gloucester), Chair of the Assembly Women & Children Committee made the following remarks at Tuesday’s meeting regarding legislation to help survivors of sexual assault:
“At least one in five women and one in 71 men are victims of rape while many others experience some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetimes. That means the legislation we are considering here today has the potential to help countless survivors of sexual assault throughout our state.
“Although it’s never an easy issue to discuss, it is absolutely critical we address it on behalf of the people who need our support in the aftermath of such a heinous crime. This legislative package will improve access to important resources, require more sexual assault training for prosecutors, establish better communication between victims and law enforcement, and much more.
“All of this will help ensure more survivors receive the justice and assistance they deserve. Thank you to the sponsors for bringing this necessary legislation forward.”
