New Jersey Alliance For Immigrant Justice Statement in Support of The Record Guild
Newark, NJ – Wednesday, February 10th, 2021 – In response to the announcement of The Record Guild news union, Amy Torres, Executive Director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice released the following statement:
“The Alliance proudly stands with journalists in the formation of The Record Guild news union. Local journalism is invaluable to exposing the truth to the public and moving justice forward. In New Jersey, local journalists lead the way on reporting issues of importance for immigrant justice in New Jersey– from exposing abuses and inhumane conditions at local ICE detention facilities to reporting on policies of inclusion such as access to driver’s licenses, professional licenses, and pandemic relief for residents without immigration status.
“Throughout the pandemic, journalists have often been on the front lines risking their lives while reporting whether from a news conference or covering a protest while also facing the threat of furloughs and layoffs. Our local reporters make it possible for the public to understand the burden of Covid19 on our public health system, and the racial disparities between Covid19 cases, deaths, and seeking care or vaccinations.
“New Jersey needs newsrooms that reflect our state’s diversity to ensure an unbiased news environment and fair and accurate reporting. We are proud to stand in support of The Record Guild.”
