NEW JERSEY ASSEMBLYWOMAN BRITNEE N. TIMBERLAKE TAKES LEAD TO RESTORE $46.5 MILLION TO STATE BUDGET
(TRENTON, NJ—JUNE 15, 2018)- New Jersey Assemblywoman Britnee N. Timberlake (D-34) sponsored a budget resolution to restore $46.5 million in funds to the state’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund to assist families. The current budget removed those funds from the Department of Community Affairs and redirected them to the Department of Human Services.
“In America, everyone should be able to afford housing. It is our responsibility as legislators to ensure that this basic necessity remains accessible for our working class families and those struggling to make ends meet in New Jersey,’ said Assemblywoman Timberlake. She went on to add, “I will fight for every dollar in favor of high quality affordable housing for all. That means that here in New Jersey, all funds for workforce housing must stay at the Department of Community Affairs for its intended purpose.”
New Jersey’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund was designed to assist municipalities, nonprofits and for-profit developers to create affordable housing, primarily through gap financing when other public subsidies and private financing was insufficient.
The Affordable Housing Trust Fund is relied on as a funding source for the State Rental Assistance Program and housing and homeless prevention services. In 2015, Governor Chris Christie’s administration tried to divert the Affordable Housing Trust Fund money to the State’s General Fund. The Affordable Housing Trust Fund is funded through the realty transfer fees on home sales. Without that funding, many affordable housing projects around the state would simply go undone.
About Assemblywoman Britnee N. Timberlake
Britnee N. Timberlake was elected as the youngest freeholder to the Essex County Freeholder Board in 2014. She was appointed as Freeholder President in 2015. In 2018, Timberlake was appointed to the New Jersey Assembly to complete the term of Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver who vacated the seat to become Lt. Governor of the State of New Jersey. Timberlake represents the 34th District, which encompasses Clifton, Montclair, Orange, and East Orange. She serves on the following legislative committees: the Joint Committee on Economic Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity; the Education Committee, and the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee. Timberlake has a B.A. in political science and an MPA from Seton Hall University.
