Trenton, NJ — Google today rolled out its 2018 Economic Impact Report, showing that 36,000 New Jersey businesses and nonprofits used the company’s search and advertising tools last year to generate $7,750,000,000 in economic activity. Google’s search and advertising tools help organizations connect with the people and communities they serve, increase their online presence and thereby create more revenue and jobs in the local economy.

This is the tenth year Google has released the Economic Impact Report, with New Jersey scoring 9th in the country for economic impact despite being 11th for number of organizations using digital services.

“For small businesses across the U.S., the web is the most powerful tool to attract new customers and retain existing ones,” said Mary Ellen Coe, President of Google Customer Solutions. “Last year, our search and advertising tools helped generate billions of dollars in economic activity for millions of businesses – helping to create a lasting impact on local communities. And we look forward to working with New Jersey business, nonprofits and publishers to help their businesses grow.”

Google’s report highlights businesses throughout the country, including Partake Foods in Jersey City. Founded in 2017 by Denise Woodard, the company specializes in gluten-free, allergen-free, vegan and non-GMO cookies which can be purchased at over 250 vendors across the Northeast and South or online. Woodard started the company upon discovering her daughter was allergic to several foods, and uses Google Merchant Center to upload and manage product data as well as Google Trends to guide her marketing efforts. Partake Foods has sold more than 50,000 boxes of cookies since it launched and experienced a 303% year-over-year revenue growth.

A recent national study by Deloitte found that over 80% of small businesses surveyed are not fully using online digital tools. The same report determined the following:

  • Digital small businesses are nearly three times as likely to have created new jobs in the last year.

  • Digital small businesses are seeing four times higher revenue growth.

  • Digital small businesses are almost three times as likely to reach more customers via increased calls, leads and sales inquiries.

  • Digital small businesses are three times as likely to have exported a product or service.

To support more small businesses, Google launched its Grow with Google initiative to help create economic opportunity for Americans. Drawing on Google’s history of building products, platforms and services that help people and businesses grow, the initiative aims to give Americans access to the best of Google’s training and tools to grow their skills, careers and businesses.
