New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Statement on Passing of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce is saddened to learn of the passing of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver. As the first Black woman to serve as Assembly Speaker, Lt. Gov. Oliver was a tireless advocate on a wide variety of issues and she always listened to the concerns of New Jersey’s business community, especially small businesses. She was a passionate supporter of urban revitalization efforts and she realized the state’s economic success was dependent on all New Jerseyans having access to safe, affordable housing as well as a quality education.

It was always a pleasure to see her as an attendee on our Walk to Washington, at our Legislative Open House, and many other chamber events throughout the years. Lt. Gov. Oliver cared deeply about her constituents and was passionate about making sure their interests were represented.

From a personal standpoint, I always enjoyed our interactions – and I admired her because she was a gracious and caring person who was devoted to our state.

Our condolences to Lt. Gov. Oliver’s family and her many friends on this enormous loss for New Jersey.

Tom Bracken, President & CEO, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce
