NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF STATE REMINDING VOTERS TO CAST THEIR BALLOTS IN LOCAL ELECTIONS ON APRIL 20

Resources Including Dedicated Web Site, Information Line Help Answer Questions

TRENTON, NJ, March 26, 2021 – Fresh off seeing a record-breaking number of ballots cast for the 2020 general election, New Jersey state election officials are reminding voters of the resources available to help cast their ballots in the upcoming April 20 local elections.

“More than 4.6 million ballots were cast in November,” said New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way. “New Jersey voters really showed up in the 2020 general election and we want to make sure they have the tools and information to show up for the upcoming April elections as well.”

Voters should know to:

  • Check with their Municipal Clerk or County Clerk’s office to determine if their municipality is holding an April election.

  • Visit Vote.NJ.Gov to check their registration status, register online, or update their registration. Voter registration must be completed by March 30 to vote in the April 20 elections.

  • Find their current polling location using Vote.NJ.Gov’s polling location tool, and decide whether they will vote in person on April 20 or request a vote by mail ballot. Since hours vary by municipality, voters are encouraged to check ahead with their Municipal Clerk if they plan to vote in person.

  • Request appropriate accommodations for voters with disabilities if needed.

  • Request a vote by mail ballot if they need or prefer to vote from home in the upcoming election. Unlike in 2020, voters will not automatically receive a vote by mail ballot to participate in the April 20 elections. Any registered New Jersey voter can choose to request a vote by mail ballot using one of the following methods:

    • Go to the Vote By Mail page on Vote.NJ.Gov to download and print an Application for Vote-by-Mail Ballot. Then, mail or deliver the completed application to the appropriate local County Clerk. In order to be sent a ballot by mail, the application must be received by the County Clerk by April 13.

    • Apply in person at a voter’s local County Clerk by 3:00 p.m. on April 19. Find the contact details at Vote.NJ.Gov.

Returning a vote by mail ballot is once again as easy as VOTE, SIGN, SEAL, RETURN. However voters decide to return their ballot, it is important to note that deadline times vary by municipality, so voters should check ahead with local Municipal Clerk offices. Return options include:

  • Mail: It must be postmarked on or before April 20.

  • Secure Ballot Drop Box: Place it in one of their county’s secure ballot drop boxes in use for this election by April 20.

  • Board of Elections Office: Deliver in person to the county Board of Elections by close of polls on April 20.

  • NOTE: Vote-by-mail ballots CANNOT be returned to polling places for this election.
