Forever Chemicals: man-made compounds found in a variety of consumer and industrial products that are incapable of being fully broken down by the environment. The chemicals—which are scientifically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS—have been shown to cause cancer, abnormally low birth weights, and thyroid hormone disruption. Multiple cases of drinking water contamination by these “forever chemicals” have been observed across the United States.
