New Jersey State AFL-CIO: A Union Contract for Christmas

A Union Contract for Christmas

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO congratulates Sean P. McBride, President of IFPTE Local 196, and Jimmy Robertello, Business Agent of Local 196, on their recent organizing victory in Camden County. After 2½ years, this duo successfully organized 80 drivers who are employed by the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

These drivers, mostly African American women and senior citizens, are the people who deliver Meals on Wheels, shuttle seniors to doctors and supermarkets (pre-COVID), drive the college buses on campus, and are considered essential employees especially during inclement weather.

On December 16, 2020, the 80 drivers unanimously ratified their first union contract, which includes a substantial retroactive pay increase for the year 2020, several paid holidays, paid lunch for full-time drivers, health benefits, promotional opportunities, a just-cause clause, and substantial uniform, shoe and clothing provisions to be provided by the SJTA.

“This victory could not have been possible without the assistance provided by New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech,” President McBride said.

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO welcomes our new sisters and brothers of Local 196 Chapter 11, who will have a happy holiday season because of this contract.
