| Newark, NJ – August 1, 2024 – Newark EMS Corps today announced that the organization is now accepting applications for young people in Greater Newark, ages 18 to 26, to participate in a five-month, paid emergency medical technician (EMT) job training program. In addition to EMT training, the program also provides youth development, mentoring and job placement services. Anyone interested in participating in Newark EMS Corps can submit an application here by September 1, 2024.
Direct service provider Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN) has been selected as the implementation partner and is fielding inquiries about job applications. Nonprofit funder GreenLight Fund (GLF) Greater Newark helped bring the proven EMS Corps program to the Greater Newark community, making its first investment selection in September 2023. Public Works Alliance is the national non-profit that is expanding the EMS Corps program in Newark and nationwide. RWJ Barnabas Health’s Mobile Health will also serve as a training partner.
“GreenLight Greater Newark is so excited to invite young people in Newark to submit an application to receive invaluable EMT training, mentoring and job placement services through Newark EMS Corps,” said GreenLight Greater Newark Executive Director Tish Johnson-Jones. “There is an urgent need for more meaningful workforce development opportunities for Newark’s youth, and EMS Corps helps open doors while also providing critical medical services to our community.”

In addition to improving health outcomes and providing lifesaving care, EMS Corps helps break down barriers by supporting sustainable career pathways. The inaugural cohort of trainees will start in September 2024. Up to 40 young people will go through the program annually.

GLF Greater Newark has selected Early Literacy as the focus area for its second selection cycle and is currently considering organizations for expansion. GLF Greater Newark will be announcing its second investment selection in September 2024.
