NJ Alliance for Immigrant Justice Celebrates Federal Court Decision Upholding Immigrant Trust Directive
Newark, NJ- July 29th, 2020– In response to today’s decision by the Federal District Court upholding the 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, Maneesha Kelkar, Interim Director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice released the following statement.
“We celebrate today’s federal court decision to uphold the Trust Directive. The directive protects New Jersey’s immigrant communities from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency that has an uninterrupted record of violating people’s rights, including separating families, without accountability.
“As one of the most diverse states in the country, New Jersey’s immigrants are essential to our communities. With the Trust Directive in place, New Jersey’s immigrants are less afraid to reside in the place they call home, especially those who are victims and witnesses of crimes for which they may need to seek assistance from their local police officers. This directive takes a step in the right direction to building trust and making New Jersey a more fair and welcoming state.”
