NJDSC Calls on Van Drew and Smith to Support President Biden’s American Rescue Plan
House is expected to vote on $1.9T proposal today
TRENTON, NJ — With President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan slated for a vote in the House of Representatives today, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee is calling on Rep. Jeff Van Drew and Rep. Chris Smith to put partisanship aside and support the $1.9 trillion relief package. Polling has shown that President Biden’s proposal is extremely popular, with 72% of Americans supporting it according to a recent national poll and support for the plan coming from across the ideological spectrum, including earlier this week from a group of 150 of the nation’s top CEOs.
“Americans are still struggling due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and we need our leaders to step up and help our residents, small businesses and communities survive,” said NJDSC Executive Director Saily Avelenda. “This decision shouldn’t be hard. It’s crystal clear how badly this assistance is needed, from sending $1,400 survival checks to funding vaccine distribution to helping prevent layoffs of teachers and first responders and much more. If Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith don’t put partisanship aside and step up now to do the right thing for the people they represent then they will seal their fate in next year’s election and permanently define themselves as callous, uncaring empty suits who will be defeated in 2022.”
