NJDSC Chairman Releases Statement on Nancy Pelosi Stepping Down as Top House Democrat

Chairman Jones thanks Speaker Pelosi for Decades of Service to Democratic Party & the American People

TRENTON, NJ – Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision today to step aside from Democratic Party leadership, New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr. is releasing the following statement:

“Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been a staunch defender of Democratic ideals and values from the moment she entered the House in 1987, which is what has made her such an effective leader of the Democratic Party. Under Speaker Pelosi’s nearly two decades of leadership, and while serving as first woman Speaker of the House, Democrats were able to pass some of the most historic legislation in our country’s history: the Affordable Care Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Inflation Reduction Act and numerous other pieces of legislation; as well as navigate the country through a global pandemic, multiple economic crises and the tumultuousness of the Trump presidency. Despite the constant attacks she has drawn from Republicans, it is undoubtedly clear that we are a stronger and more perfect union because of the tireless work Nancy Pelosi has put in during her tenure. I thank her for her tremendous service to our country along with her fellow House leaders Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn.

As we move forward into this new chapter, I’m excited to see our party coalescing around Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York to become the first Black House Democratic leader, alongside a diverse and experienced leadership team. Rep. Jeffries has been a bold advocate for working families and has worked to repudiate the radical extremism we see coming out of the Republican Party. He would be an excellent choice to lead House Democrats forward as we stand against an expected slim House Republican majority that will be beholden to its most extreme members and chaotic impulses. Rep. Jeffries and his team will need our full support in the coming years, and I know that our party will unite around him and work to hold the Republicans accountable.”
