NJDSC Muslim and Jewish Caucuses Release Joint Statement on Jersey City Shooting
TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey Democratic State Committee’s Muslim and Jewish caucuses are releasing the following joint statement regarding the tragic shooting incident in Jersey City earlier this week that claimed the lives of four innocent people, including a Jersey City police detective. The NJDSC Muslim caucus is co-chaired by Jessica Berrocal & Sikandar Khan, and the Jewish caucus is co-chaired by Steven Goldstein and Ben Kelson, who said:
“Together, we in the Muslim and Jewish Caucuses of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee are horrified by Tuesday’s shooting in Jersey City that murdered six people at a kosher market. We stand together against hatred, and our prayers go out to the victims, including the fallen officer, and their families.
Living in the magnificent mosaic of New Jersey and all America, we embrace our commonalities and respect any differences, and commit redoubling our efforts to work together, as the family of Abraham, to fight hatred against all oppressed communities – including, but not only, our own.
Over the past few years, hatred against both the Muslim and Jewish communities, and certainly other communities, has increased. With great prejudice, Muslims have been targeted with harmful policies, including Muslim refugees. Leaders have spoken outrageous Antisemitic tropes and made outrageous Islamophobic statements, while refusing to condemn white nationalists. We stand united against all forms of hatred and bigotry, and pledge to work together toward greater understanding of different cultures that recognizes our common humanity.”
