Pascrell Announces $1.1M Federal Grant for Superstorm Sandy Recovery

Funds will go toward restoration of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s deck and buildings damaged during Sandy

PATERSON, NJ – Today, U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) announced the awarding of a $1,162,364 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to New Jersey which will be used to restore Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) property damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The funding, made available under the Robert T. Stafford Act, will provide contractors and resources for the repair of facilities still not at full capacity since the superstorm.

“As families, businesses, and utilities continue to recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy, every federal dollar remains crucial in our state’s recovery efforts,” said Rep. Pascrell.  “The storm caused widespread damage to PVSC properties causing the interruption of services.  This award will help strengthen and prepare PVSC for potential future disasters.  Wastewater treatment facilities like PVSC provide a critical service in protecting our environment and the public’s health, so their recovery must continue to remain a priority.”

The federal grant will assist PVSC with the use of force account and contractors for the repair to the Oxygen Deck and De-humidification Buildings #5 and #6 damaged as a result of the storm.

Since 2012, Rep. Pascrell has fought continuously for federal support to aid in New Jersey’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy. Last fall, he introduced disaster tax relief legislation to provide relief to those recovering in the aftermath of natural disasters. In the days following the storm, he wrote to FEMA Regional Administrator Lynn Canton urging the agency to provide resources to PVSC in order to assist in resuming operations.
